Musik X is the debut release from German-based producer Oto, the man behind Mykiti and B.F.D.E. The project is being billed as the English language version of B.F.D.E. and yet, there are very few of the samples and sounds present on this release that can be attributed to Mykiti, it’s almost as if Oto is targeting a different audience. Still, Musik X is a welcome addition to the Ableton scene as it brings some much needed variety to the table and although it may lack the deep production quality of the original, it stands out on its own with an ease of use that makes it accessible to a wide audience. Intro Opening track “Happiness” is what I’d describe as “grimey electronica”, featuring a few industrial influences that also recall Mykiti’s earlier works. “Bingo Bongo” is the next track and the first foray into what I’d consider old school, downtempo styles. I’m not sure if I’d call this piece “breakbeat” but it’s an interesting blend of bassline patterns and ambient samples that put together a nice vibe. “Blue Monday” follows and is my favorite track on the disc. Oto has decided to bring back the synthesizer for a number of arrangements that feature a much more tribal feel to the style than the previous tracks. “Boom Boom Boom” is another piece of electronica that is much more upbeat, and yet is another good representation of Oto’s style and sound. The title track, “Musik X” is almost an exact copy of the original, except for the sample breaks, which have been replaced by an 808-style drum machine. This song is probably the closest Oto has come to Mykiti, though it’s not a Mykiti track by any stretch of the imagination. “Just a Little Bit” is a more melodic piece of electronica that has Oto experimenting with both his past and future sounds, some of them are rather strange and hard to describe, but they come together and create a very interesting collage. “A Million What's New in the Audovia?
